Fact: Statistics say that 2 in 5 students will drop out of high school. Another Fact: We can change these statistics one child at a time. José Andrés challenged everyone in attendance, upwards of 300 local professionals, to help change this statistic. It is because of his strength and support that José Andrés received BUILD’s Innovation in Entrepreneurship Award this evening.

The event kicked off with a reception featuring cocktails and passed hors d' ourvres while Supporters network and get to know our young entrepreneurs and their inventions. There was everything from Children's Books to Headbands made out of T-shirts! Let's Enjoy Them!

High School Entrepreneurs with their very own licensed businesses pitching their inventions to Guests, Making Sales and Creating Contacts. Their comradary along with the Support of their Parents and Mentors these kids believe they can achieve anything! Let's Encourage them!
After the reception came the main event where Guests were educated about the BUILD program and inspired to help make a difference all while enjoying a 3 course seated dinner. Guests also listened to a keynote by José Andrés and high school senior and Chief Operating Officer of the student run business, Tasty Treats, Geraldine Bolden. Geraldine, a resident of Ward 7 in Southeast DC, shared how BUILD has become a key support in her life as she navigates the challenges of growing up in a tough neighborhood and preparing to apply to college to become a clinical psychologist. Let's infuse them!

Through individual investments totaling more than $50,000 bringing the total amount raised from the gala to $120,000, community members committed to helping grow BUILD Metro DC’s impact to serving 2,000 students in 10 years, which furthers BUILD’s mission of using entrepreneurial experiences to engage students and guide them not only through high school graduation, but to post-secondary success.
