FROM DC TO DOHA WITH THE PHILLIPS COLLECTION

Friday, May 13th, 2016... Bad luck? Maybe for some, but not for those gathered at the annual Phillips Collection Contemporaries Bash. This year’s theme was 'Dreaming of Doha’, aiming to infuse attendees with the whimsical romanticism of the Gulf. Upon entry to Dock 5, one met with live art, where Arabic calligraphy was in the process of being stenciled on a large backdrop.

Nearby, an open bar stocked full of champagne greeted arrivals and kept pace with the crowd throughout the evening. The long lines at the last year’s open bar were nonexistent, partially due to double the number of bars placed throughout the Dock 5 venue at Union Market. This made for easy access to your favorite beverage.

The venue was transformed with color and curtains, as well as lighted doorways that made for lovely photo opportunities. (They were also incredibly easy to tip over)

Gaming stations in a back corner offered additional entertainment, while a henna artist was onsite to provide attendees with a semi-lasting memory of the evening.

An art installation by Daniel Wurtzel was extremely popular with all attendees, who jumped in and out to swirl with the transparent fabric and capture Instagram-able photos!

Outside, Mike Dupuy Falconry had a station with beautiful falcons that made lovely photo companions. The birds were good sports, and like any celeb, handled taking pictures with a multitude of admirers with the utmost aplomb.

The catering was elegant and the tables held an array of delectable bites. Hummus, ground lamb kofta with spices, pita, grilled haloumi cheese – and my favorite – baklava were available throughout the evening; before it was noticeable that food was dwindling, catering had restocked the table.

It took a little time (and open bar-hopping) for the dance party to get started, but once it did everyone was out on the floor. DJ Ben Chang kept spinning pop jams and the last of the Bash- goers danced into the early hours of Saturday morning. The Phillips Collection Contemporaries Bash co-chairs and host committee successfully dreamed of Doha; let’s see what they dream of next year…
